South Delhi holds some of the city's oldest monuments, from the Delhi Sultanate. Qutub Minar and Hauz Khas make a natural pair for a day.

Qutub Minar

Begun around 1199 by Qutb ud-Din Aibak and completed by his successors, the minaret is about 72.5 metres tall and is part of Qutb Minar and its Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 1993). The complex also has the ruins of the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque, the Iron Pillar and the Alai Darwaza. The minaret itself is not open for climbing.

Mehrauli Archaeological Park

Next to Qutub Minar, Mehrauli has many tombs, mosques and stepwells spread across a wooded area, and is a good place for a longer walk with a guide.

Hauz Khas

Hauz Khas has a 14th-century reservoir dating to Alauddin Khalji's time and, beside it, Firoz Shah Tughlaq's madrasa and tomb. A deer park is next door and the village around it has cafes and boutiques. Late afternoon suits the light.

💡 Timings, ticket prices and entry rules change, so check the official source before you go.
