Uttar Pradesh has some of India's best-known pilgrimage cities. Each has its own rituals, crowds and etiquette, which is where a local guide is most useful.

Mathura and Vrindavan

Mathura is one of the seven sacred cities in Hinduism, with Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, the site traditionally revered as Krishna's birthplace. Nearby Vrindavan is known for the Banke Bihari Temple, built in the 19th century, and for its Holi celebrations. Both are very crowded on weekends and festival days.

Prayagraj

Triveni Sangam is the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna, where, according to tradition, the mythical Saraswati also joins. It hosts the Kumbh Mela, and boats take visitors to the confluence.

Ayodhya

Ayodhya lies on the Sarayu river. The Ram Mandir, dedicated to Lord Rama, was consecrated in January 2024, and the city also has Hanuman Garhi and ghats along the river. Security is strict, and phones and cameras are generally not allowed inside.

💡 Timings, ticket prices and entry rules change, so check the official source before you go. Dress modestly, follow each temple's own rules, and ask before photographing people.
