Dashashwamedh Ghat and the Ganga Aarti

Priests perform the Ganga Aarti here every evening with lamps and chanting. Arrive well before it starts for a good spot.

A boat ride at sunrise

A boat along the ghats at sunrise is one of the most popular ways to see Varanasi. Agree the fare before you board.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple

One of the most sacred Shiva temples in Hinduism, housing one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The present temple was built in 1780 by Ahilyabai Holkar, and the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor to the ghats opened in December 2021. Security is strict, and phones and bags are usually restricted inside.

Sarnath

About 10 km from Varanasi, Sarnath is where the Buddha gave his first sermon. The Dhamek Stupa marks the site, and the Lion Capital of Ashoka, India's national emblem, was found here.

Photography with respect
