The forts
Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur: founded by Rao Jodha in 1459 on a rocky hill above the old blue city, with a museum in its palaces.
Jaisalmer Fort: founded in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal, built of golden sandstone, and a living fort where people still live and work.
Chittorgarh Fort: one of the largest forts in India, with the Vijay Stambh and Kirti Stambh towers.
Kumbhalgarh Fort: a 15th-century fort in the Aravallis built by Rana Kumbha, with a very long perimeter wall.
Planning
The forts are far apart, so many visitors plan a multi-day route. October to March is the best season; summers are extremely hot.
